How Many Pages Should My Website Have?

One common question we hear from our clients is “how many pages should my website have?”. While there is no simple answer, here are some tips we give to small business owners regarding how much content to have on their website.

Answer: It depends on your business.

Think of your website pages like entry doors to your business for traffic from search engines. How many should you have? Five, 500, or 1,000? There is no magic number. In fact, the answer to this question is, “It depends”. It depends on your website type and your organization’s goals. For example, an e-commerce website could have thousands of pages but a website in a specific market could only have a few hundred.

Every website has two different audiences:

Human visitors (potential customers, etc.)
Search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.)

In our opinion both audiences are important. When we are building websites for small businesses, we try to keep a balance. For us, human visitors are more important, but the search engines should not be ignored.

Search engines want as much content as possible.

If you want your website to rank well with Google and other search engines, than give them a lot of content. Make subcategories for your services, instead of having a one page with services, make them separate for example if you have a transport and logistics company, make a logistics services and transport services separate. For example, our client AB Global Logistics wanted to have a separate page “sale of tires” under his services page.
